Twenty yards from the house the trees ceased, and a rank vegetation of reeds and rushes took the place of the bushes, and the ground became soft and swampy. A little further pools of stagnant water appeared among the rushes, and the path abruptly stopped at the edge of a stagnant swamp, though the passage could be followed by the eye for some distance among the tall rushes. The hut, in fact, stood on a hummock in the midst of a wide swamp where the water sometimes deepened into lakes connected by sluggish streams

Understandable, since it seems that most of Henty's books were written to introduce and explain a bit of history for schoolboys, but I personally would have enjoyed seeing more about King Alfred. Also, parts of the story felt more like a history text than a story. There are ways to weave historic details into a story without having them feel like intrusions, but at least in this book, I do not think Henty managed that. Henty's stories are aimed at boys and are super patriotic, to the point of offending those that aren't British. As a result, all his heroes are blond boys. Thankfully, this is believable in The Dragon and the Raven, unlike The Cat of Bubastes (really, a blond boy in Ancient Egypt?).

Great adventure book. Although it was written for young people, it is a good read for all ages.

I loved the book but the printing is really small and seems almost a misprint. The pages have a ton of whitespace but the print size is less than 12. I need to buy the book on tape because the size was unreadable.

Loved this entertaining saga and look forward to purchasing more.

It's an old book, and so rather stilted. But it still reads pretty well for historical fiction.

When I first picked up this book I thought 'Oh another old book' but as I got into it I ended up loving the book. the story of the main character and how he grows up is amazing Henty really did an outstanding job on this. I would highly recommend this book to another reader, not only is it amazing, it also gives a perspective of sorts to the way Saxons lived during that time period.

Son really enjoyed!
not wild about it. You had to listen closely to the words or you could not understand them due to a very heavy accent from the one doing the reading. I never finished the book.
