The songs threaded through the ""Little House"" books, often in snatches, have been traced via ""early sheet music, hymnals, song albums and broadsides,"" newly and practically arranged for piano and guitar by composer Hubert Haufrecht, and presented with some of the appropriate Garth Williams illustrations. Mrs. Garson, for whom this was a long labor of love, tells a little about each song and places it in the context of the story, also supplying a page reference for each.

Our family treasured the Little House books of Laura Ingalls Wilder for family reading

Our family treasured the Little House books of Laura Ingalls Wilder for family reading. Our children grew up with Laura, Mary, and Almanzo, following them from one home to another, from Wisconsin to Kansas, back to Minnesota and finally to De Smet, South Dakota. But then we discovered The Laura Ingalls Wilder Songbook (Harper & Row, 1968), with words to all the verses as well as the refrain and with music arranged for piano and guitar. If the tune didn’t come easy to us, we could always pick it out on our old upright piano. Wild roved an Indian maid, Bright Alfarata, Where flow the waters Of the blue Juniata.

By the Shores of Silver Lake is an autobiographical children's novel written by Laura Ingalls Wilder and published in 1939, the fifth of nine books in her Little House series. It spans just over one year, beginning when she is 12 years old and her family moves from Plum Creek, Minnesota to what will become De Smet, South Dakota. The novel was a Newbery Honor book in 1940, as were the fourth through eighth books in the series.

Although Laura Ingalls Wilder’s readers know her younger self well from her Little House books, the adult Laura is more elusive. The Little House books became staples in libraries, schools, bookstores, and homes around t. he world. Reader response to the books was overwhelming. Her later written introspections are scarce, save for columns she wrote for the Missouri Ruralist during her middle-age years. She kept no regular diaries, except for brief trip journals.

Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in 1867 in the log cabin described in Little House in the Big Woods. She and her family traveled by covered wagon across the Midwest. Later, Laura and her husband, Almanzo Wilder, made their own covered-wagon trip with their daughter, Rose, to Mansfield, Missouri. her books "grow" with the reads. If reading as an adult, don't let the childlike writing discourage you from finishing the entire series. I loved them all as a child, and enjoy also reading them as an adult.

Each book contains lyrics to folk or patriotic songs. See The Laura Ingalls Wilder Songbook reference below for full lyrics and music. New York: HarperCollins Children's Books. Laura Ingalls Wilder's sequence of autobiographical memoirs (I am reluctant to describe them as "novels", despite being aware of the occasional fictional liberties Laura took in telling her stories) are among the greatest books of the Twentieth century, precisely because she captures the period, location, life and people so vividly.
From the early pages of "The Little House in the Big Woods", food (its gathering and cooking) is an everyday focus: readers who find the "Little House on the Prairie Cookbook" can happily explore the down-to-earth home-cooked recipes of Laura and her family.
Equally, from those early pages, Pa with his fiddle, and the family singing folksongs and hymns and other popular ditties, is another everyday focus.
Anyone who reads the Ingalls Wilder books to another person -- adult or child (and this is one of life's great pleasure, to SHARE the "Little House" books) -- ought to be able to hum or whistle or sing what the book can only name or quote with unmusical words.
Hooray for the "Song Book" that provides the music, and words, and a snippet of explanatory background for each item.
Some great books are enhanced by scholarly Prefaces, or Notes, or, better yet, by richly informative annotations on details that bring the book all the more deeply to life.
The "Little House on the Prairie" COOKBOOK and SONGBOOK go beyond simple scholarly annotation (valuable though that would be!), yet they serve a very similar purpose.
There are, I believe, audio CDs of some of the "Little House on the Prairie" music. Good as these CDs may be, they present only one way of conceiving the music, and at best they let you sing along.
Having the printed music allows readers to personally recreate a key component of the "Little House" experience.
(I am reminded of the way the Burl Ives character in the Disney film "So Dear to My Heart" -- originally a novel by Stirling North, and surprisingly similar in many ways to E.B. White's "Charlotte's Web", but earlier than "Charlotte" -- would spontaneously sing folk songs as a natural commentary and entertainment. This use of music comes from an earlier era, but one that has much in it to value, and emulate.)

Thank you for carrying this wonderful title! I received it on time and the condition was as I expected -I will use this a lot as I work at Laura Days in Pepin. I have used a faded xeroxed copy of this for ten years in my music at the festival. So glad to have this beautiful bound copy. This is my Bible for that work. I love the fact that the Garth Williams illustrations are included, and the citation is noted for each song. Thank you for making it available and it will be treasured.

With guitar chords and single note melody lines the tunes are easy to play, even on my Lowrey organ. The author's included subtext explaining the circumstances of Laura Ingalls Wilder's including references in her books.

This book contains all the songs referenced in the Little House Series and is a great resource for authentic folk music performance.

I ordered a used copy of The Laura Ingalls Songbook for my daughter who is on a Laura Ingalls Wilder reading jag. I already have a copy of it for myself, but when my daughter, who lives 2,000 miles away, asked about the words to a certain song and expressed such an interest in the book, I decided to get her one. It arrived in good condition and was as advertised. The price was reasonable. All told, we were both happy.

When I was a child, I read all of Wilder's books and searched out any items or information related to her. One of my possessions was this songbook, from which my mother would play songs on the piano. I don't know what became of that copy, but now I have a replacement and my husband plays songs from it for me!
Finally, after searching for the tunes to the songs we did not already know from the Little House series - Finally, we have found the songbook that contains simple versions of these songs. So many of the other books we've looked at only had the songs we already knew. Thanks for making this available for us!!
