The songs threaded through the ""Little House"" books, often in snatches, have been traced via ""early sheet music, hymnals, song albums and broadsides,"" newly and practically arranged for piano and guitar by composer Hubert Haufrecht, and presented with some of the appropriate Garth Williams illustrations. Mrs. Garson, for whom this was a long labor of love, tells a little about each song and places it in the context of the story, also supplying a page reference for each.

Our family treasured the Little House books of Laura Ingalls Wilder for family reading. Our children grew up with Laura, Mary, and Almanzo, following them from one home to another, from Wisconsin to Kansas, back to Minnesota and finally to De Smet, South Dakota. But then we discovered The Laura Ingalls Wilder Songbook (Harper & Row, 1968), with words to all the verses as well as the refrain and with music arranged for piano and guitar. If the tune didn’t come easy to us, we could always pick it out on our old upright piano. Wild roved an Indian maid, Bright Alfarata, Where flow the waters Of the blue Juniata.

By the Shores of Silver Lake is an autobiographical children's novel written by Laura Ingalls Wilder and published in 1939, the fifth of nine books in her Little House series. It spans just over one year, beginning when she is 12 years old and her family moves from Plum Creek, Minnesota to what will become De Smet, South Dakota. The novel was a Newbery Honor book in 1940, as were the fourth through eighth books in the series.
Although Laura Ingalls Wilder’s readers know her younger self well from her Little House books, the adult Laura is more elusive. The Little House books became staples in libraries, schools, bookstores, and homes around t. he world. Reader response to the books was overwhelming. Her later written introspections are scarce, save for columns she wrote for the Missouri Ruralist during her middle-age years. She kept no regular diaries, except for brief trip journals.
Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in 1867 in the log cabin described in Little House in the Big Woods. She and her family traveled by covered wagon across the Midwest. Later, Laura and her husband, Almanzo Wilder, made their own covered-wagon trip with their daughter, Rose, to Mansfield, Missouri. her books "grow" with the reads. If reading as an adult, don't let the childlike writing discourage you from finishing the entire series. I loved them all as a child, and enjoy also reading them as an adult.
