As a Caucasian, even I feel extremely uncomfortable reading this book to my child. I felt like it was filled with hidden meaning and had no place on a childrens bookshelf.

I don’t believe Kid Me would have cared much for this book either, but for the very young, this book may indeed entertain.

I think this book is very cute. The illustrations are beautiful and my daughters love the glitter inside!

Now im going to tackle the dumb race pc issue that prompted my review. My husband is asian and I am white, so we have mixed children that look more asian. Ben the polar bear says at the end of the book "he's happy he is the same color as his sister and his mom" my daughters are the same color as each other, but not me. No one in our families is offended. My daughters(the oldest a tween) has never corilated shes not the same color as me because the book is about polar bears NOT people! Why some reviewers are trying to relate to a polar bear being white is beyond me. The book talks about " Ben, the polar bear being the same color as his sister and his mom" he finds out that being white isn't as boring as he thought and that he is the same color as snow. At the end he finds out he's good at playing hide and seek with his other animal friends. His other animal friends match some other colors in the book, but no one pointed that out, they just want to focus on the polar bear being white.

I thought this book was charming. He thought he looked boring, looking like all the other polar bears, then relished his new colors, then finally decided it was great to look like his family, after all.

I was shocked when I read this book because the underlying story is that you want to be "white" just like your family. It reverberates with the message that "white" is good. I guess the writer doesn't realize that diversity is important, and it's okay to be different. Our family was made through adoption, and we have family members of different races. This would not be a book for our family or any family that believes in embracing difference.
