Decoding words is another way To comprehend what words say, But Dolch words should be known on sight If they will be read just right. When words don't sound the way they look, Should readers learn from a list or a book? A list is fine from time to time. If sight word mastery is the goal, Pictures are not the things to behold. Pictures can help children visualize But dependance on pictures can close their eyes. Draw a picture with many a word? I don't think that is absurd. Dolch books are more fun, like rhythm and rhyme. When all is said and all is done, I'll take you back where I've begun. I can't draw an at, a was, or a too. Can you?

The Dolch word list is a list of frequently used English words compiled by Edward William Dolch, a major proponent of the "whole-word" method of beginning reading instruction. The list was first published in a journal article in 1936 and then published in his book Problems in Reading in 1948. Dolch compiled the list based on children's books of his era, which is why nouns such as "kitty" and "Santa Claus" appear on the list instead of more high-frequency words.
Dolch sight words should be recognized instantly in order for reading to progress smoothly.
This book can be used for regular, remedial, or enrichment instruction because the ages of the children are not shown. Most stories only have animal characters.
