David Pearson lives in the old mining region of Genoa, Nevada, where he owns an antiquarian book business. This is the best collection of old mining photographs that I have seen published.

David Pearson lives in the old mining region of Genoa, Nevada, where he owns an antiquarian book business. There are some very rare pictures of underground workings, and there are some also rare pictures of the insides of the mills. And pictures of the mining camps, boom towns, and of miners. David Pearson also has included some excellent color photos of some of the 19th Century mining tools and equipment that he collects. The book is a treasure trove of pictures for anyone who is interested in ghost towns and old time mining.

David W. Pearson also lives near the Ludwig historic mining district of Nevada and he is also an experienced, long-time student of mining and collector of mining artifacts. He has examined thousands of items in public and private collections and watched the evolving market carefully. I thought this book would explain more about mining in the West. Instead over half the book was old photos and the other half was laid out in a strange format that was not very education /easy flow.

In the West, forming relationships with your co-workers tends to take time and occurs over long periods. However, in the East, you are immediately treated like close family. And as for networking, you might think that the East is way ahead of the West in terms of technology. This may be true, but they still like the old-fashioned use of business cards. These are just a few cultural differences between the East and West.

In 2005, David Foster Wallace delivered the This is Water commencement speech at Kenyon College. I’ve studied and written about the most viewed commencement speeches in the past, but this one is special. In just over 20 minutes, he covers the unsexy yet very real realities of day-to-day adult life. The graduating audience appears to laugh at various times in the speech, but I don’t think David Foster Wallace intended for any of it to be humorous. He’s calling out the default setting of the unconscious human minds that are all too common in mainstream society.

This fantastic book goes into great detail about the real lives of the brave 49ers and those who followed them, facing unbelieveable hardships in the hopes to striking it rich-finding the Mother Lode. This book discusses the expansion of mining from gold to silver, and eventually to copper, in many of the Western states. Significant mines in California, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Idaho, Colorado, and Arizonia are all discussed, including their dates of operation and production records. The growth of railroads and transportation is explored, as is the evolution of mining technology. This book takes you through hundreds of historical photographs, each accompanied with a brief description. The photos range from miners working in tunnels to overview photos of camps and towns.
The information in the book is short and to the point. This is a wonderful resource to get the feel of what mining was like in the 19th century. There is also a section showing antique mining tools, certificates, and other pieces of paperwork that might interest collectors.
The book touches on mining in many states. Included with each state section is a brief history on how mining came to be and how it changed life in the towns at each location.
An incredible pictoral resource, the book doesn't go into huge volumes of detail regarding mining life, but David Pearson touches on all major aspects of mining in the Old West. The book is one of the best on this subject that I have found!

The pictures are reproduced very well and the book is printed on good quality, heavy paper.

I only wish the book were twice as big, and twice as long!
