The thesis of this book is that, whilst development should not necessarily be equated solely with economic growth, a broader and more human definition might promote beneficial change. In developing this thesis, the author brings the debate into an unusual context – the European Community.

Individual and political action on climate change can take many forms. Many actions aim to build social and political support to limit, and subsequently reduce, the concentration of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere, with the goal of mitigating climate change. Other actions seek to address the ethical and moral aspects of climate justice, especially with regard to the anticipated unequal impacts of climate change adaptation.

Samuel P. Huntington. Foreword by Francis Fukuyama. Book Description: This now-classic examination of the development of viable political institutions in emerging nations is a major and enduring contribution to modern political analysis.

He developed the famous concept of 'spill-over', . the idea that integration in one functional area would quasi-automatically lead to further integration in other areas. While focusing on an analysis of selected groups, institutions and ideologies specific to the European setting, he derived from the unique experience of the ECSC some general propositions about the conditions under which the transfer of national sovereignty to a larger supranational political community can happen.

Law-and therefore lawyers-play a central role in the contest over the scope and meaning of globalization. It was this promise of progressive change that animated three strains of legal activism that emerged during the Cold War era: public interest law, law and development, and human rights.

Until recently development has been perceived as an uncomplicated and unqualified human value. As the true cost of development in the 'third world' has become apparent, and the benefits difficult to discover, some have argued that the notion of development is itself fundamentally misconceived. Joanne Scott brings this debate into an unusual context - development within the highly 'developed' European Community. She explores the problems experienced by the Community in its attempts to 'develop' the 'lagging' regions, and considers the important role of law in shaping its policy. She examines both the meaning of development and the effects of different definitions. Her underlying thesis is that while development should clearly not be equated with economic growth, a broader and more human definition might promote beneficial change and contribute to the protection of environmental and social diversity within the Community. All who concern themselves with development, agriculture, environment and the future of the European Community will find these arguments stimulating and important.
