Castle of dark shadows. Gothic Historical Romance. Passion for vengeance. The secret of lighthouse pointe. Shadows of the heart.

Olivia Hampton's lifelong love of dark literature led her to accept a job as a cataloger for Julian Dunraven's extensive but extremely disorderly library. The only problem is that the position requires her to work at Dunraven Castle, the remote and mysterious home of the Dunraven family. In Victorian America, a young lady had to either earn her keep or be married off to the best man for her hand. Olivia accepted the position at Dunraven Castle. Olivia could not have guessed the dangers that awaited her in the exotic but darkly menacing castle. When there is an accident on the road to Dunraven, she wonders: Are the broken carriage wheels mere random misfortune or a sign foretelling doom? Olivia's fears soon turn to mortal terror after a subsequent encounter with a terrifying faceless phantom disabuses her of the 'random misfortune' theory. Frightened but undaunted, she decides to put the nightmare behind her and throw herself into cataloging the enormous Dunraven library. What Olivia could not have foreseen was the devastatingly beautiful Marion Dunraven's effect on her heart. But the madness that seemed to curse the rest of the Dunraven family makes Olivia realize she must find a way to escape Dunraven Castle with her life and the woman she loves before they both become victims.

This is the first novel I discovered by Patty G. Henderson, but it will not be my last to enjoy. With an aging castle, a series of strange coincidences, and a passionate story of attraction, this was a real page turner. My imagination ran wild in the secret garden and trembled in the sprawling hallways of Dunraven Castle. Olivia and Marion are caught in a house of secrets where they will find that madness can be evil. Nice reading on a cold drizzly evening by a warm crackling fireplace.

I was privileged to read an advance copy of Castle of Dark Shadows by Patty G. Henderson, and having already given her The Secret of Lighthouse Pointe a five-star review, I was excited to see that Castle delivers an even more exceptional read. All Henderson's books are wonderful, and she just keeps getting better and better.

The storyline has been told in another review, but Castle presents a wonderfully eerie combination of a castle, naturally, together with romance, madness and murder. This is complete page-turner, with compelling plot, characters that reach right into your heart (or clasp their cold, clammy hands tightly around your throat) and a writing style that reveals an abundance of talent, craftsmanship and professionalism.

Throughout the first half of the book, Henderson takes the love story between Marion and Olivia to a high level of purposely unarticulated passion, the wordless love all the more intense and breathlessly anticipatory by virtue of actions unexplained and longings and lust internalized. And then all hell breaks loose! Whoa, Henderson has gone beyond the more subdued innuendos and chaste allusions of her past books to a love realized in all its emotional, psychic and sexual expressions. The hunger of her two protagonists is palpable...the satiation worth the wait!

Henderson's writing has evolved to a level of master storyteller, and this book is a veritable showcase of that craft level. Her sentences vibrate with a wail and then a sob and then a song, and her characters' depths are revealed in the slow drum beat of rising tension, the internal monologues of her main protagonist, Olivia, and the perfect pacing of this story. Through Olivia we see the uncertainties, the confusions, and the fears of thinking one is falling in love alone. The exhilaration Olivia experiences when she thinks maybe, just maybe, her love is not on a solo journey to oblivion is an exhilaration we share as readers, identify with as people and live for as women and lovers.

The late Michael Cox wrote two wonderful books (The Meaning of Night and The Glass of Time) within the past dozen years in the spirit of the great Gothic novelist, Wilkie Collins, but Cox wrote a more modern, literary and updated Gothic; Henderson has updated both these writers by inclusion of a love between two women that has been around and needed to be told since great shadowy mansions, families with dark secrets and passionate brooding lovers were invented. In other words, since forever. The Castle of Dark Shadows is a book you will want to read and re-read when you want your Happily Ever After with a goodly dose of `OMG!'

I read this book in two sittings--couldn't put it down. I love Gothic novels and this one was wonderful. The romance is charming and I loved the chemistry between the two main characters. It's sexy and hot without being in the least explicit. The Gothic atmosphere is also spooky and well described. Can't wait to read another one by this author. She mentions in the afterword that she plans to write more--hope she does!! I will be waiting to order them! (I plan to get the Lighthouse one next).

Ms Henderson wows us with this one. I can't wait to read more of her writing. She really puts us in the story with great scene building and tension. No Spoilers here but the characters are well varied: some to like, some to hate, some to want to cheer for. Castle is a very nice naughty read that'll keep you up past bedtime.
All I can say is, I was really upset when this one ended. It catches you in the very first chapter. Books like this one, just make me want to go right on to another in the same genre. The castle really gets under your skin. Don't miss this one. It will give you the shivers. Oh I love the books that are offered by Kindle @ Amazon.com Norma
